Bid with Barry by Barry Rigal

When it comes to responder’s actions, times have changed over the years. In the good old days (when it seems everyone only had good hands!) jump raises were slam tries, single raises invited, and nobody ever bid when it was the opponents’ hand. Those days are gone; if you have a fit so do they. The battle is to see who gets there fastest with the mostest.

 Your choice:
A: Bid 1NT. Try to avoid rebidding a five-card suit in sequences like this -- the call promises six. Here your diamond stop may be less than ideal (in this case non-existent) but it is the bid suggested by your high-cards and distribution, so go for it!

 Your choice:
A: 4: Bid four spades. You may have only five points, but your fifth spade and good intermediates together with your ace and diamond fit suggest that four spades must have play. Not all bad hands are the same -- this is a good bad hand!

 Your choice:
A: 3: Bid three spades. Your partner’s sequence suggests a 3-5-4-1 shape and real extras (with a minimum opening bid he would raise directly to two spades). Your fifth trumps and fitting red suit cards give you enough to invite to game.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Bid three diamonds. This shows an invitational hand, and although you only have three trump, your partner has promised 5-4 in the minors. Accordingly, your fitting minor cards make this the right call.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Bid four hearts. Facing a second in hand preempt you can drive to game – and you should play in hearts not spades. When a weak hand and a strong hand each have their own good suit, play in the weak hand’s suit. The weak hand’s suit may be useless because of a lack of entries, unless it is trumps.
