Bid with Barry by Barry Rigal

Things have changed from our previous sets. Not only do we have to worry about the opponents bidding, they actually have already done so. When the enemys are silent we have to strike a happy medium between getting to our best spot and making sure the opponents don’t have an easy way in to the auction. Once they bid, our focus shifts to raising in our best when we can, making sure we can show both weak and strong hands - and catching the opponents when they have stepped out of line.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Bid three spades. Your partner has shown real extras and a two-suiter. In the context of having passed you have a superb fit for both suits, and a maximum hand – so let partner in on the secret too.

 Your choice:
A: 2: Bid two diamonds. With your fitting minor-suit cards it might be tempting to bid two no-trump, or three diamonds, but you do have only a nine-count with limited controls. So settle for simple preference here.

Dbl... Negative, showing four spades

 Your choice:
A: 2NT: Bid two no-trump. Your partner’s forcing bid asks you to describe your hand – and the main unexpressed feature is your decent heart stop. You can always show your moderate diamond support later.

Q: 4 - What do you bid as South?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Bid three hearts. When the opponents double, your raise to the three-level is distributional rather than a high-card limit raise. With the stronger hand you would redouble, or bid two no-trump conventionally, (known as Jordan or Truscott) to show precisely that hand.

 Your choice:
A: 2: Bid two spades. In the context of your two-club raise, you are not minimum, with a useful fifth trump, so do not sign off in three clubs. Bid where you live – you have denied holding four spades since you did not make a negative double – but if partner gives up in three clubs, you can pass that, of course.
