Daily Bidding Questions by Frank Stewart

When Frank Stewart's "Daily Question" column was (and is still) published, each hand has a companion bidding question which is, or is not, related to the said hand.

With Vu-Bridge, best is to gather these questions as a quiz, for your enjoyment...

Question 1

  Your Hand
 Q J 8
 A 8
 Q J 6 4
 Q 10 5 2

Q: 1 - You are the dealer. What is your opening call?
SouthWestNorthEast
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Though opening bids seem to have gotten lighter, and some good players would open, it's questionable to initiate an auction when your defensive values are lacking. This hand has little in the way of playing tricks and only one defensive trick, nor is there a lead-directing benefit in opening in any suit. I would pass with no feelings of guilt.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 J 3
 A K 8 7 2
 J 5
 A J 10 8

Q: 2 - Your partner opens one spade, you respond two hearts, he rebids two spades and you try three clubs. Partner then bids three diamonds. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass2Pass
3Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: In theory, partner shows a minimum opening bid with six spades and four diamonds. In practice, he may have bailed out to three diamonds with K Q 8 7 6 5, 4, A 7 6, K 6 3. Bid three spades, which, after your bid of three clubs, partner will treat as forcing.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A Q J 9 7 3
 8 4
 9
 K Q 8 5

Q: 3 - You open one spade, and your partner bids two spades. The opponents pass. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: One school of thought advocates bidding four spades after a single raise with almost any hand containing a six-card suit. That may be too dogmatic. Still, if partner has an average raise such as K 6 5 2, 7 6, 8 7 6 5, A 3 2, you can take 10 tricks. Your hand is certainly worth a try. Bid three spades or three clubs.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K 6 5 4
 K Q
 A J 5 4
 7 3

Q: 4 - You open one spade, your partner responds 1NT, you bid two diamonds and he tries two hearts. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1NTPass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Your partner has fewer than 10 high-card points but at least six cards in hearts. If he had a hand such as 3 2, A 10 6 5 3, 8 7, K 8 6 2, he would have returned to two spades. Bid four hearts. If he holds a typical minimum such as 2, A J 7 6 5 4, Q 3 2, 9 5 2, he'll have a decent chance for 10 tricks.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A 3 2
 6 4 2
 A K 2
 Q J 10 9

Q: 5 - Your partner opens one diamond, you bid two clubs and he raises to three clubs. What do you say?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
2Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Partner may have minimum values, and if you weren't proud of your two-club response, you could pass. With your actual hand, bid three diamonds to look for game. If partner bids 3NT next, you'll pass and wish him luck. If he does anything else, you'll look for game or slam at a minor suit.
