 Attitude leads by Linda J Green

The lead of an honor carries a specific message "Partner I have the card immediately below, but not the card immediately above".

However, sometimes we are not so lucky to hold those glorious honors and sequences, so we try to send a message to partner as follows:

When we make a lead of a low spot card against a suit or no trump contract, we choose the 4th best, and we tell partner we have an honor. This is called an ATTITUDE lead. "LOW LIKES", L-L. This tells partner I have an honor so I like it.

The lead of a high spot (usually the 2nd best) card says we hate our lead. We should play "High Hates", H-H.

Let's look at a few situations with the following quizzes.

 Your choice:
A: 9. Attitude, High, I do not like it partner! When the opponents did not use Stayman to look for a 4-card major they usually have the minors. A major is the way to go but which suit? As there is no entry in the hand partner is rated to have the remaining high card points. Try to find partner's long suit by leading the shorter major.

* Stayman

** No 4-card major

 Your choice:
A: Q. Here it is not the attitude but the quality. It is better to lead from what you have than from what you do not have! In other words the heart suit is a better suit to tell partner than leading a high card from a longer suit which is unlikely to produce any tricks.

The lead of the Queen, missing one small card the 10 is still a sequence.

 Your choice:
A: 8. We lead the unbid suit. "High for Hate". A low heart would show an honor.
Therefore we lead the second highest to show no honor, and partner can work out from the bidding that you do not have a doubleton, as declarer did not bid the heart suit as a second suit.

* Shows a stopper in spades looking for a heart stopper asking partner to bid No Trumps.

 Your choice:
A: 7. Attitude lead. High-Hates. Adding these points plus declarer's points plus dummy points, partner is rated to not have many hcp at all.
Leading a high card shows no interest and as dummy bid the suit showing a stopper it seems to be the safest lead.
