What to lead when the opponents bid two suits by Linda J Green

When the opponents bid two suits, showing an unbalanced hand and steer away from a No Trump contract, which suit should we lead?

Everything depends on the bidding whether they rebid their own suits or show delayed support for partner's suit.

 Your choice:
A: Q. I was wondering who was going to win the war? I learnt many years ago that when we do not fit, QUIT!

Anyway, now that a lead must be made the Queen is almost a full sequence. When one card is missing ( the 10) this is considered a full sequence. Leading from an interior sequence Jack is not as solid as the diamond suit.

 Your choice:
A: 10. We have two choices between the unbid suits. Leading the ten has 3 cards missing A, Q, J. Leading away from a KJ, 2 cards are missing A, Q. One has a better chance to expect partner to have one of the 3 cards missing instead from the shorter one. The ten is an interior sequence. QT98 is the same.
Please note: AT98 - NOT ALLOWED. We cannot lead away from an Ace in a suit contract!

 Your choice:
A: 3 Having the majority of the HCP partner is rated to have very little in values. Leading the longest suit is hopeful knowing one is going to regain the lead with the Ace of trumps in anticipation partner may get a diamond ruff.

Leading a singleton is not a good idea knowing partner has not much to offer and giving the opponents the advantage of the bad break in the club suit.

 Your choice:
A: K. When one has all the remaining HCP partner is expected to have almost zero. It is a good idea to lead the King in case declarer could have a doubleton Qx and partner may have a 5 or 6-card suit to the Jack. It is our only hope to beat the contract.

Please note: The lead of an Ace has a special meaning: It promises a long sequence demanding partner to throw away an honor.

 Your choice:
A: 4. If partner did not overcall 1 over 1, it is advisable to lead the other unbid suit. Listen to the bidding. Many a time one can be guided by the lack of an overcall, as to which suit partner had the opportunity to bid and did not!
