 L073 Fun with leads-choices! by Linda Green

Do not despair! Leads can be fun when we have choices. Of course the pace of the bridge hand depends so much on what one decides to lead. Listening to the bidding will give us clues and being focused helps our game improve by 50%.

* Invitational, not forcing
Remember: All direct jumps in old suits either by opener or responder are invitational.

 Your choice:
A: 9 - When partner did not overcall at the one level in the heart suit and one is long in both their suits a trump lead is mandatory. There is a rule that says "If they settle in a 3rd suit, LEAD A TRUMP!" This is done to prevent the hand from cross-ruffing the 2 suits. Hoping to continue trumps at every opportunity.

 Your choice:
A: 5 - When they did not use Stayman, looking for a 4-card major, do not lead a minor. It is advisable to lead from a better major suit. Timing is everything. Setting up a Jack may take too long to develop.

 Your choice:
A: 8 - As the hand has no entry, try to find partner by leading the shortest major. Partner will think you are brilliant, as partner will have the remaining HCP, and probably that is partner's best long suit.
Leading the spade suit and no entry, Xmas will come before one can set up that suit!

* Invitational, 6-card suit medium range hand 15/17 HCP

 Your choice:
A: A - Here there are no choices! When one holds an outside Ace and King, always lead the Ace to tell your partner where you have values! Thereafter one can look at dummy, and switch to the club suit if need be! The correct lead is low, the 2, to show length 2 or 3 cards. Leading a high club, partner will think it is a doubleton or singleton.

* Stayman, asking for a 4-card major.

 Your choice:
A: 9 - Being focused on the bidding and listening to partner leaves one with no choice!
When partner doubled an artificial suit of Stayman, it shows a 5-card suit, and 2 of the top 3 honors in that suit, asking for a club lead. Listening to the bidding and knowing the responder went to 3NT, who has a 4-card spade suit? Responder, no spade lead here!
