Leads from Queens and Jacks by linda j green

Leading from Queens and Jacks does not set tricks as quickly as from Aces and Kings in a No-Trump contract. Leading from Kings can be better than from Jacks and Queens in a suit contract. Sometimes we have no choice and we have to make a decision which is better?

Some are more rewarding than others. Let us see what to do in various situations.

Q: 1 - As South, from which suit do you make a lead?

 Your choice:
A: J. As the opponents did not use Stayman, we should lead a major. Leading from a sequence is far safer than leading from an empty heart suit.

Leading from an Ace fourth is a very bad thing. Do it only if you have no other options.

 Your choice:
A: 6. Leading from your longer major gives one the chance of developing extra tricks in that suit. Leading low allows you to leave partner with a card to get back to you. If you lead the Ace and King, with no entry partner may not have a card to return to you.

 Your choice:
A: 7. Leading your 4th highest from your longest and strongest suit gives you the best chance to defeat the contract. Hopefully partner will have a club to get back to you, as there is no entry in this hand. Despite no major, try to develop the longest suit.

 Your choice:
A: K. Leading from a better sequence will gain more tricks quickly than from a Jack, which is a slow suit. Defenders need to build tricks quickly in a suit contract.

 Your choice:
A: 5. Try to build more tricks in the club suit, knowing you are gaining the lead with the trump suit. Leading from a long suit often works out well if you hold the entry in the trump suit. Sometimes partner may be short, and can get some ruffs to defeat the contract.
