 What card do you lead when partner overcalls? by Linda J Green

What do you lead when partner overcalls a suit?

Partner overcalls a suit usually for a lead, and not necessarily to buy the contract, promising at least two of the top 3 honors.

At the one level, a minimum of a 5-card suit. At the two level, a 6-card, or a very good 5-card suit.

 Your choice:
A: 2 When we lead a low card we show 3 or 4 cards and length. Leading a high card or the middle card partner may think you have a doubleton. It does not promise an honor. Partner needs the count and to know how to defend.

* 2NT = 18/19 as partner bid at the 1-level. A FREE bid of 2NT guarantees a strong hand.

 Your choice:
A: 3 Despite partner bidding a weak hand, partner promises 2 of the top 3 honors. For example, AJxxxx or KJxxxx.
Leading low shows 3 or more cards. Partner may have an entry like an outside Ace or King. Lead the suit.
