"History of Bingo Day" by Marti Ronemus

Did you know that Bingo originated in Italy in the early 1700s? Neither did I. Hopefully, you aren't so sophisticated and world-weary that you can't enjoy an old-fashioned game of Bingo. What is more fun than being the one to shout it out? What is more disappointing than only needing one more number and hearing someone ELSE shout it out. Bingo can be played casually at the kitchen table or viciously at the Bingo hall... just like bridge. A level for every player.

And for our last quiz of 2014, here are five questions to have you shouting out BINGO when you get them right.

Question 1

 K J 7
 A J 10 7 5 3

Q: 1 - As South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Part of your decision depends on your partnership preempt style. How light is Pard likely to be? Some think vulnerability can help with the decision, but vulnerability never gained you or lost you a trick... just a score. We see possible Club and Heart losers, could be a mess. But, to re-quote Clint Eastwood, "Are you feeling lucky?"

Question 2

Q: 2 - South speaks?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass1
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: A nice double fills in that center square on the Bingo card. You must get in this auction, and although the Diamonds are great and you might just consider bidding them, the fact that you've got those Spades and a decent playing hand, a double gives you a two-fer. It's important to show those four Spades.

Q: 3 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: It's tempting to rebid the Hearts right away, but this hand is very distributional and you've got a Pard who is unlimited and may have a five-card club suit. First show support. You've got 15 pts in favor of clubs. Show it. You're going to get another chance to show the six Hearts.

Q: 4 - South?

?

 Your choice:
A: 4: When Pard called Double, you got your Bingo! You know Pard has Diamonds, so you've got a fit there. You know Pard also has four Spades. Wow. With the double fit and the singleton Ace in the enemy and that nine-card trump fit, you can barely sit still!

Question 5

 7 6 5 4 2
 A 9
 8 4 2

Q: 5 - One last chance to hit that last number. South says?
SouthWestNorthEast
-2DblPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: West's bid is weak and preemptive, and North, bless him, isn't going to sit still for this. Interestingly, East didn't extend the preempt. Our 2 bid is the highest we can afford, though.

Should we have bid more? Will Pard advance our bid? Will the opponents get back in the act? Stay tuned, because we get to play this hand next.
