"Extraterrestrial Visitor Day" by Marti Ronemus

This is the day to celebrate your bridge partners and opponents. After all, it has become obvious that their extraterrestrial origins are the only explanation for those bids and lines of play.

And how about you? Alpha Centari? Horseshoe Galaxy?

Let's see if your home planet reveals itself with these questions and the hand that follows.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K J 9 7 6 5

 A K 5
 A K 10 6

Q: 1 - We start with an exciting one. As South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
3Pass5Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 6: When Pard jumps to a Club game after his 1 No-trump bid, it makes our toes curl. He didn't have the cash to buy the two level, but he must be very shapely and eager for action. There's no simple way to ask for aces so just go ahead and bid it.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 K J 8 6 5

 A K 10 7 2
 J 10 4

Q: 2 - South again:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Don't look to the Mothership for help on this one. We need to figure out a way to convince Pard we have five Spades. Rebidding them as an unsupported suit would show six. We are going to introduce Diamonds at the three-level, which is NOT a jump shift. When you bring a new minor into the bidding at the three-level, it is expected that you hold five. Since you bid the Spades first, you MUST have five Spades. Pard will know you are five-five in the pointed suits, and game going values. He should know what to do now.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A 6
 K J 5 3 2
 Q 7
 A 10 9 4

Q: 3 - South's bid:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: While it's tempting to bid 3 as a Help Suit Game Try (we know Pard only has 6/9 pts, but if they are in Clubs, we might have game so we ask by bidding Clubs--why else name a new suit after trump agreement?) BUT our hand isn't quite good enough. Even if Pard has help in Clubs, we don't have that much a chance for game. Usually HSGT is used when we have an invitational hand.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K 6
 A J 9 4 3
 Q 7 5 4
 A K

Q: 4 - What about this time? South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is the perfect time for HSGT. We know Pard is minimum, but if his points are in Diamonds, like the K for example, we've got a great chance for game. If Pard has no help in Diamonds, he'll rebid 3 and we'll be just fine. No need to be beamed out of trouble.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 Q 8
 Q J 9 4
 A 5
 A 10 6 3 2

Q: 5 - One last chance to prove you are a citizen of Earth. South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: This is all about hand evaluation. When Pard bid Hearts, our hand certainly improved, but it's still a minimum. Quacks, scattered honors and a (so far) non-working Q. Enough is enough.

And now, let's look at a heavenly (for someone!) hand.
