"Buzzard Appreciation Day" by Marti Ronemus

The poor, poor scorned buzzard, despised because he's ugly and eats road kill. Today is the day we recognize him as Nature's sanitation staff, always ready to clean up other's messes. He's Johnny-On-The-Spot for clean up, and helps keep things tidy.

And a lot of bridge partners are like that, aren't they? Heaven knows my Pards are often called on to clean up my disasters. And today we've got some nice opportunities for you to save the day too.

 A K Q J 8 7 6
 Q J 9

Q: 1 - Lots of choices. Which will work best for South?
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Yet another use for our friend the Cuebid! Over a weak two, a cuebid of the opponent's suit says, "Pard, if you've got a stopper in Their suit, bid 3 No-trumps. Otherwise, bid your lowest suit. Neat, no? By the way, talk it over with your Pard: Many would open that hand 2 because there are 8-1/2 tricks in hand.

Q: 2 - Hmmm. How do we respond to Pard's cuebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
-23*Pass
?

*Says, "Pard if you have a stopper in Their suit, bid 3 No-trump. Otherwise bid your lowest suit."

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trumps: Well, Pard asked for a Spade stopper, and we've got one, albeit a slow one. We bid the No-trump contract. Without the Spade stopper, we'd have to bid our Clubs.

 Q 10 9 4

Q: 3 - And South says?
SouthWestNorthEast
-22 No-trump*Pass
?

* 2 No-trumps over a weak two means "I would have opened 1 No-trump but they pushed me higher."

 Your choice:
A: 3: We could be forgiven for a Pass, but our shortness in Hearts makes it worth a try for Stayman. We are indeed forcing Pard to game and he might be buzzard-bait. BUT!! East is pretty much marked with the missing cards, and that will help.

 A Q J 5 3
 K 7 3

Q: 4 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Not a single eyebrow would raise if we jumped to game with three Spades. BUT! We do have an honor and an honorette. The key is that all we need to make the contract is one of two finesses to work, and that's a 75% chance. We're figuring on five Spade tricks, one Heart, one Club, and three, maybe four Diamonds. That's pretty darn good. The key to knowing what to do over a preempting Pard is to count tricks, not points.

Q: 5 - One last chance to avoid being road kill. South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Here's a chance to have your cake and eat it too. You have no interest in a major, so a No-trump bid showing 10-12 hcp is perfect.
