"True Confessions Day" by Marti Ronemus

One hardly knows where to begin with the true confessions. Those among us who came of age during the '60s... well, you just had to be there, right?

BUT!! Discretion is the better part of valor, so on this day where we are invited to tell all, we instead will focus our attention on telling all with our bids. Five challenges ahead....

Question 1

 A J 9 5
 K 7 6 4 3

Q: 1 - As opener South, what is your rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: This isn't a "true" confession, as we don't have four Spades. BUT! What are our alternatives... we can't bid Hearts, as that would be a reverse and we're too poor. We can't rebid the Diamonds (please say you weren't thinking that!). No-trump is a no-starter. That leaves us with supporting Spades. With two honors, we don't have to be too ashamed. Because of our side shortness, we can get away with it. Before you put down your dummy, tuck your Club in with the Spades. Oops...

 K 9 4
 9 6 5 3

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: Double: Perfect! Says, "I have FOUR Spades. If I had five, I'd overcall." Also shows 6-plus points... unlimited.

 A Q J 3 2

Q: 3 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Forcing. We intend to bid Spades next if Pard doesn't bid them first, but first we need to ensure a forcing auction. With a strong two-suiter, we don't want to begin with a negative double, although the double would show the four Spades.

Q: 4 - Should South rebid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1223
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: You did open the hand 1, didn't you? It's too strong for a preempt. But it is a minimum opener, which means you don't have the right to bid again. UNLESS!! You've got extra, like the ninth trump. Time to tell the whole story...

Question 5

 K 9 6

Q: 5 - One last chance to confess all: South?
SouthWestNorthEast
-11Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Repeat after us: "In a competitive auction, a raise of your partner's suit is the WEAKEST response you can make, and shows the number of trumps, not points, you hold." Read that again. If you were to bid 3, which is an option in a non-competitive auction, you'd be showing less than 10 pts., and four trumps. You need to cue-bid the opponents' suit which says "I've got a fit with you AND 10 PLUS POINTS. I am NOT weak!" Forcing. And you're confessing the whole truth. Great bid!

And now let's see how great your play is.
