"National Ferret as Pets Day" by Marti Ronemus

And who wouldn't want a ferret as a pet? They sleep 18 hours a day, awake and active only between midnight and 6 a.m., they are little escape artists that can squeeze through a 3" hole and hide while eating your electric wires and have what looks like 72 teeth. They are as playful (and destructive) as a barrel of monkeys. Did I mention how adorable they are? And affectionate?

Interestingly, they have been domesticated for 2000 years, and have proven to be little heroes. Boeing Airlines used them in the 1960s to run wires through inaccessible spots in the wings, and so did the builders of the Large Hadron Collider.

To solve today's quiz, we're going to need to be as agile as ferrets, squeezing out of tight spots. Let's go!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K Q 5 4 3
 A 9 8 7 6
 5 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
PassPassPass1
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: This is the hand that the Michaels Cuebid was born for, showing 5-5 or 6-5 in the majors. What could be better? Don't play Michaels? Then you would bid 1 and rebid your Hearts later if you get the chance.

 8 5

Q: 2 - South again:
SouthWestNorthEast

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Look innocent (like those adorable ferrets) when you do it. You've just placed ten Spades, and that's going to be a great help in counting the hand.

Question 3

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
PassPassPass1
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: This is the Unusual No-trump, showing 5-5 in the two lowest unbid suits, in this case the red suits. What, you say... shouldn't we JUMP to 2 No-trump for the Unusual No-trump? Not when you're already a passed hand. You can't be overcalling 1 No-trump unless you found another Ace in your hand.

Question 4

 K 9 5 3 2

 A 4 3

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
PassPassPass1
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: It only hurts for a minute, but we just can't overcall a suit this bad. We could overcall at the 1-level, but we really need a sounder suit at the 2-level.

Q: 5 - One last chance to wriggle through a skinny spot. South?
SouthWestNorthEast
PassPassPass1
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We would sure like to get in the action, but we have no bid. We have the wrong shape for a double, and no suit to bid.

And now, let's try a hand.
