"Potty Training Awareness Month" by Marti Ronemus

One of the (few) benefits of growing older is that there are certain problems we no longer need to have on our radar. Potty training is (hopefully) one of them. UNLESS!! There's a new puppy in your house. For the rest of us, today is a day of celebration of the problems we DON'T have to worry about.

Now, a bridge tie-in. If we extend the metaphor of "potty training" to include all behaviors one needs to be part of polite society, then we all know many bridge players who could use some serious training, no?

And now, how about five questions and a hand to focus us on the problems we DO have!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K 10 9 2
 3 2
 8 7 5 4 2
 3 2

Q: 1 - Does South have a problem?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Dbl
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: In a competitive auction, raising your Pard's suit is the weakest bid you can make. This jump to 3 shows four-card support and a terrible hand. It is meant to be preemptive and designed to make the opponents' lives as miserable as a pile of dirty diapers.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A K 8 4 3
 K J 7 4
 4 3
 A 8

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 No-trump: Did we hear right?! With all our goodies, Pard reversed! We have slam for sure. We can either ask for Aces because of the worthless Diamond doubleton, or go right to 6. We like 4 No-trump, because we are thinking Grand Slam.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 Q 10 3
 K 9 3
 Q 8 4
 A Q 9 2

Q: 3 - Does South have a problem with this one?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1DblPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: No problem with this one! Pard promised an opening-ish hand, with tolerance for any suit, and at least 4-3 in the majors, with shortness in Their suit. We've got game values and Club stoppers.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 10 3 2
 9 8 3
 10 7 6
 Q 8 4 3

Q: 4 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1DblPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: NOW we have a problem! Sadly this occurs now and then. We might end up in a six-card fit, and that's just bad Karma. Why Hearts? Up the ladder. Some would bid 1 and that would be okay also. All bids are equally pathetic. Our real hope is that They bid and save us.

Question 5

 Q 4
 A J 8 2
 A J

Q: 5 - One last chance. South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--11
1*22Pass
?

*Promises five Spades. With four, we'd negative double.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Almost too simple. We might be temporarily tempted to go for game, but we need to downgrade this hand. Our Q is likely to be worthless, and we aren't crazy about hands where the honors are concentrated in SHORT suits. Let's make our problem, our partner's.

And now, let's solve the problem facing us with our hand.
