"A Little Bling" by Marti Ronemus

As someone who loves a little bling (perhaps too much so), I was enchanted to find out that sequins date back to the pharaohs of Egypt, and in fact, "gold sequin-like disks" were found adorning King Tut's mummy.

Early sequins were made of precious metals so weren't really part of everyday couture until a way was found to use Eastman Kodak film acetate. And to our enjoyment and fun, they are now made of plastic and are ubiquitous.

Today we're going to add some sparkle and glamour to our bidding. Let's play.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 10 6 5
 3 2
 8 7 4
 A K J 9

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-11Dbl
?

 Your choice:
A: Redouble: East's Double is Negative, promising four Spades and probably a fit with Diamonds, as he sure doesn't have Clubs. Our Redouble shows an opening hand of our own but not support for Pard. With support, we'd either cuebid with a nice hand or raise with a bad hand. This is perfect...

Question 2

 A K J 9 8 7 2
 K 8
 8 6

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass

?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Yes, we only have invitational HCP, but bridge is NOT a game of points, it's a game of tricks. Add some distribution in there. This hand is covered with sequins and opposite a Pard with Diamonds and Spades covered, we belong in game. 3 could be passed!

Question 3

  Your Hand
 K Q J 9 7
 6 4
 K 8 7
 4 3 2

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: More and more people open these five-card suits in third seat. It sure makes it hard for the opponents to enter the auction. Pard, however, must understand that as a passed hand, he must not advance the preempt. We're already bidding for both of us, and one opponent!

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A Q 7
 K Q 8
 2
 A K 8 7 6 5

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Opener, unlike responder, has a limited number of forcing bids available. One is a reverse. The problem is we don't have another four-card suit. We're going to have to "prevaricate." If worried about our little white lie, we can tuck our Diamond in with our Hearts. The problem of course is that any rebid of Clubs can be passed, so we gotta make a very shiny, glittery bid... which means a reverse.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K 8
 3 2
 A 8
 A K Q 5 4 3 2

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: A chat with Pard is in order. Would we interpret that as Michaels? Or is it asking Pard to bid 3 No-trump with a Heart stopper? The danger with bidding here is that it pushes us past the 3 No-trump contract which is what we really want. 3 wouldn't be sequined enough. 4 would show that super suit and a big hand, but it pushed us past the Magic Contract. A double would likely push us past 3 NT also. We like this bid to ask for a stopper.

So let's go shine at a hand.
