"Round and Round We Go" by Marti Ronemus

Roller Derby is one of those incomprehensible spectacles you just can't stop watching... sort of like professional wrestling. Its evolution began in the 1930s and peaked during the 60s. Surprisingly it is currently enjoying a Renaissance, so we need to know a little about it.

First, there's good reason for the skaters' "nom de plumes," like Barbie O'Havoc and Electra Q Tion. Fan feelings run hot and the women are often stalked. Next, Velcro is their enemy. Although it holds equipment in place, a little piece loose can scrape skin thusly wounding worse than a punch. Finally, they have an unusually high level of sportsmanship and etiquette, sending Get Well Cards and flowers to injured opponents.

Should we bridge players follow the example of these warriors Athletes (and make no mistake-- they ARE athletes!)? I'm not sure we should be sending cards to our opponents when we beat them, but there's always room for good sportsmanship.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Most play the jump to 3 as natural, showing a strong 5-5 hand. Others would be content with a forcing 2. Talk it over with Pard. If you both agree on 2, give yourself credit.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Most play a direct jump of opener's minor suit as preemptive, showing a less-than-opening hand with a seven-card suit. A double would be for takeout. This is a real in-your-face roller derby bid. Guaranteed to cause mayhem. Love it.

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Much as we like the roller-derby "take no prisoners" attitude, this suit is just too bad to overcall, and our honors are soft.

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: We can't bid our Diamonds, as we can't afford a new suit at the 2-level. The good news is our 1 No-trump bid strongly suggests a Diamond stopper.

And now, let's roll over to our hand.
