 "Pun-ishment" by Marti Ronemus

I think I've mentioned before that my BFF Shirley and my husband share an unholy love of puns. It turns out there is some neuroscience to explain puns. It was reported in "The Journal of Laterality: Asymmetries of Body, Brain and Cognition," a publication devoted to... well, I'm not really sure... that "getting" puns requires the cooperation between the left and right sides of the brain. Puns are absorbed into one side, the logical, which then sets up the intuitive side. So I'm not sure which side of my brain is failing me when I don't get "My dog is sad, she's a melon-collie," but I'm not laughing.

Moving on, let's see if our brains can cooperate on these bidding challenges. We're looking at a single situation today... bidding after a No-trump opener.

 A J 10 7
 A Q 3 2
 K 8 3 2

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---1 No-trump
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We can't pass fast enough. Most play that a direct seat double of No-trump is for penalty. It is generally agreed that you need a great lead and/or enough points to really whack the guy, usually a No-trump opener of your own. We got nothin'.

 K Q J 10 8 7
 A 2

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---1 No-trump
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: We can't double fast enough. This is no laughing matter. We've got five Diamond tricks and two Aces (spelled "entry") and 16 pts. We're going to squash this guy like a bug. Our Diamond lead will set up the joke.

 A Q 8
 A 2
 Q J 9 3

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---1 No-trump
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Tough one. We've got 16 HCP, but no running source of tricks. We're not that likely to take the needed seven tricks to set, especially since Pard is broke. We don't want the joke to be on us, so we'll sit quietly and look innocent.

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---1 No-Trump
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: We're not guffawing, but with 19 pts, we are likely to set this. It's not a done deal though, with Pard being flat broke. We'll see.

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---1 No-Trump
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: We can argue about this one. We've got six tricks, and with the short Diamonds, we can be sure the declarer is going to need to use his Diamonds. Also Pard is rated to have a little something, don't you think?

And now, our hand.
