"Cold Calling" Stayman by Marti Ronemus

Those of us who've left a cell phone outside in Winter have discovered the phone goes on the fritz. Fortunately it's usually only temporary and they recover once warmed. This got us thinking. In our on-going mission to improve not only bridge knowledge, but bigger questions, we did some research. Phones are designed to operate at their best between 32-95F. That means Minnesota might as well forget outside calls until May. Most phones will operate a little until -10F.

BUT!! Those of us who still have outdated flip phones, take note! Our phones have worked in temperatures down to -314F. Those of you who laugh at our flip phones will be begging to use them when we get to Mars. Just don't use up all our minutes phoning home.

And now, let's phone home for some answers about Stayman.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8
 5 4
 Q 9 6 5
 Q 8 6 5 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We have no interest in a major, but unless Clubs are trump, our hand is a classic Crummy Dummy. No matter what Pard replies, we're going to rebid 3. That is a signal to Pard to PASS PASS PASS. Why not just jump to 3 immediately? Down The Road, we'll learn another use for that bid. Meantime, this is how to ensure we won't be a Crummy Dummy.

Question 2

 J 8 7 6
 Q 8 7 6
 10 9 8 7 6

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Once again, our hand is absolutely useless in Notrump. This is often called Trash Stayman. No matter WHAT Pard answers, we're going to Pass. Normally, we need invitational (8-plus) pts to use Stayman, but this is a rare exception when we need our flip phone to get the message home.

 A 8

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 No-trumpPass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: We have an invitational hand, and now that we've eliminated the hope of a major fit, we need to show our point count. Pard will know we've got 8-9 pts, and he'll either Pass or put us in game.

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1 No-trumpPass
2Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: This one is so simple we don't need our Smart Phone, our old flip will do. Pard has denies holding Hearts when he bid Spades. We've got 10 pts. We belong in game, in No-trump. Bid it.

Q: 5 - South:

A: Pass: We've got the shape, but what will we do if Pard bids 2? With only 5 pts, misery awaits. Put the phone down, back away and just Pass.
