 "Cold Calling" by Marti Ronemus

Those of us who've left a cell phone outside in Winter have discovered the phone goes on the fritz. Fortunately it's usually only temporary and they recover once warmed. This got us thinking. In our on-going mission to improve not only bridge knowledge, but bigger questions, we did some research. Phones are designed to operate at their best between 32-95F. That means Minnesota might as well forget outside calls until May. Most phones will operate a little until -10F.

BUT!! Those of us who still have outdated flip phones, take note! Our phones have worked in temperatures down to -314F. Those of you who laugh at our flip phones will be begging to use them when we get to Mars. Just don't use up all our minutes phoning home.

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Pard reversed and we are not happy. He has five Diamonds and four Hearts and at least 17 pts. We have a dreadful hand and don't want to encourage him. Were we to bid 3, that would be encouraging. Most agree that 2NT is conventional, asking Pard to rebid his first suit and hang up the phone. Talk this one over with Pard.

**Help suit game try.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We are at the top of our point count, but that isn't what Pard is asking. He needs help in Spades, and we have three quick losers. We close the auction by bidding 3. BTW, guess what the opponents are going to lead? Yup. Get ready for Spades.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard has asked if we have help in Spades. No we do not. BUT!! Maybe he would be interested in our AK. We offer them as a little gift. Pard now has the option of closing the contract at 3, or if the Diamonds are a good thing, he can go to game. Up to him.

And now, get out those flip phones. We're going to communicate with Pard on a hand.
