"Got Earworms?" Opener Rebids by Marti Ronemus

Can't get that tune out of your head? It's driving you a little nuts? We call them earworms, and they are universal on planet Earth, although different in each culture. Here in the U.S. and Britain, we're trapped by sing-able, upbeat, generic pop tunes. Lady Gaga tunes are especially guilty.

Are we helpless? Is there any way out? Yes! We offer three tips. First, surprisingly, listen to the tune all the way through. Immerse yourself. Second, find a musical antidote. We suggest a rousing James Brown tune... the syncopated rhythm is lethal to worms. Finally, relax. Eventually the worms wear themselves out and we're free again.

In bridge, we've got our earworms, too. "Do the Math." "Return Your Partner's Lead." You know all those songs, right?

Let's put some to work. Today we tackle Opener Rebids.

Question 1

 K J 10
 A K 9
 8 7
 K 5 4 3 2

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Listen. We've got a minimum hand and nowhere to go. Let's discourage with the smallest bid we can give. Why not 1 No-trump? It wouldn't be wrong, but we've the A-K. Eddie Kantar suggests if this is a problem for us, just tuck one of our Diamonds in with the Hearts and make our bid.

Question 2

 6 5
 4 3 2
 A K Q J 2
 A 3 2

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: And the earworm is singing, "We never rebid unsupported five-card suits." This is an exception. Where do we want to play this hand? With four honors, we can rebid with panache. Not happy with this song? Tuck a Heart in, like last hand.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 A K 2
 8
 K Q 9 7 6
 Q J 3 2

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We are blessed with an intermediate hand and a rebid that enables us to show we have nine cards (or more!) in two suits. Our 2 bid is forward-going and will be sweet music to Pard's ears. Once he bids again, we can support Spades, showing we only had three of them.

Question 4

 K Q 9
 A 5
 J 9 8 7 6 5
 A 3 2

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: They're not exactly singing our song, are they? We can't rebid the moth-eaten Diamonds, can we? Get that song out of our minds. With our minimum hand, better to raise Pard's Spades. He'll like our offering.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A Q
 8 4
 K 7 5
 A K J 10 4 3

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: While 3 wouldn't be the worst song to be stuck with, we like 2 No-trump better. It promises 18-19 pts, which we have with that long Club suit, and we've got stoppers in the unbid suits. If we rebid the Clubs, we may find ourselves in a Club game. Ugh.

And now on to our hand.
