"Two Reasons to Quit" by Marti Ronemus

We are nine days into the New Year, and I'm willing to bet there are still some Faithful Readers out there who haven't yet broken their New Year's Resolutions. For those stalwart souls, I offer two temptations that might break the firmest resolve, each a sandwich that just might be waiting for us when we enter the Pearly Gates.

In Louisville KY, there's a specialty called a Hot Brown. Picture an open-face masterpiece with turkey, bacon and a fried egg, topped with Mornay sauce-- secret ingredients including gobs of cheese. Originally created as a hangover cure, it's now a regional staple.

Or how about this? In Detroit, we can get a Yardbird, considered by locals to be an out-of-body experience. Chicken with mustard sauce, mushrooms, cheddar cheese and crispy bacon. Just the mental image makes me weak in the knees.

If you're still determined to hold firm, allow us to distract with some bidding problems. Let's keep our minds on bridge.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 8 7 6 5
 Q 9 8 7
 A K J
 3 2

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: I know, I know. BUT!! We are in third seat. It's not likely we are going to win this auction. However, what's the worst that can happen? If an opponent doesn't get in the act, it means Pard's got more values than we expect. He may bid a major, in which case we Pass. We want to give Pard a lead, or we may snatch a nice little partscore.

Question 2

 A 9 8
 J 6 5 4 3 2

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We've got the same number of points we had last hand, but this time we can resist the temptation and keep our resolutions. We would have to bid Clubs, and I don't know about you, but that's not the suit I want Pard to lead for darn sure. Let's wait and see what happens next.

Question 3

 K 2
 9 2
 A 4 3

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: In third seat, we make bids we would never make in first or second seat. This violates all resolutions to make disciplined preempts with a terrible suit and all our values outside our "suit." BUT!! Pard is a passed hand and won't be bidding again. We have the gods' own suit, Spades. What's the worst that can happen? (Don't answer that!)

Question 4

  Your Hand
 A K 10 6 3
 Q 3 2
 3 2
 J 3 2

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--PassPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: How can you NOT bid, and with three honors, we're going to pretend we have six of them. (Eddie Kantar's advice to tuck a Club in with our Spades resounds in our ears.) In third seat, we need to lighten up our standards. This is wonderfully obstructive. Again, Pard won't be entering the auction. If the opponents want it, let them enter the auction at the three-level.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 3: C'mon, let those resolutions to follow the law fall to the wayside. This hand is worthless unless we play it in Diamonds. We have no defensive values at all. If we bid only 2, the opponents will ignore us. Let's get in there fighting.

And now on to our hand.
