"Winning at Jeopardy" Intermediate Rebids by Marti Ronemus

You watch "Jeopardy" and know at least as much as those contestants, right? You're ready for the tryouts. Before you rush off to the TV studio, here are some facts you need to know.

First, five 30-minute shows are taped back-to-back, with only about 10 minutes in between to change clothes. That can be exhausting!! Next, shows can run months after they are taped, and whether you win or lose, you are sworn to secrecy about the outcome. In fact, if you win, you won't get paid until AFTER the show airs, and you could lose your winnings if you spill the beans. Finally, it's all about the buzzer. When Alex finishes the question, a light comes on. If you ring in before the light, you are locked out. Winner have actually written articles about the best way to hold the buzzer.

And there you have it. Now let's focus on winning at bridge. Remember to frame your answer in the form of a question. Today we're looking at opener rebids when we hold an intermediate hand of around 16-18 pts.

Question 1

 A Q 10
 A 9

Q: 1 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is a classic invitational hand. If Pard has just 6-7 pts, we want him to Pass. If he's got a snazzy 8-9/10, we want to be in game. He limited his hand with his first bid, but we want to know more. It's his problem now.

Q: 3 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 3: Even though Pard has limited his hand to 6-9/10 pts, we need to pursue this further. This hand is a Trick Taker, but only if we play it in Hearts. Let's tell Pard about our six-card suit and 16-18 pts. That will finish the category for us.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 J 8 4
 K Q 9
 A K Q 10 3
 K 9

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: A jump to 2NT shows 18-19 pts. We cannot support Spades (altho' if we had a minimum hand we can raise with only three). We can't rebid the Diamonds with only five. 1 No-trump would be too small, 3 No-trump would be too large. Let's bet it all on the Daily Double with a perfect 2 No-trump.

Question 5

 K Q 9
 A K J 10
 K 10 9 8 4 3

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: After Pard's unlimited and forcing bid, we need to tell Pard about our Diamond support. Here's the interesting pard. Pard will know there's something "wrong" with our hand because otherwise we would have rebid NT at some level. He should know we are very shapely and have a "naked" major or two. The good news is if Pard has protection in the majors, he can still place the contract in 3 NT.

And now it's time for Final Jeopardy where we bet it all on our hand.
