"Where There's a Will..." Opener Rebids by Marti Ronemus

I bet more than one Faithful Reader has made a resolution to get their will in order this year. To help stimulate thinking, here are some interesting wills.

The oldest known will is Egyptian, and from 1797 BCE. The Pharaoh left everything to his wife, provided she refrained from knocking down any of their houses. Huh?

How about this one? John "Pop" Reed, a stagehand at the Walnut Street Theater in Phila., PA, willed that his head be removed, and the skull preserved to be used in the staging of Hamlet. Yuck.

And my favorite. The 1800's German Poet, Heinrich Heine, left everything to his wife, provided she remarry. Why? "At least then one man will regret my passing."

I'm not sure how to make a bridge tie-in, so let's just get to our quiz, all about rebids by an opener holding 16-18 pts, an intermediate, invitational hand.

Question 1

 A K Q 10 3 2
 K 9 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: A jump to the three-level by opener promises 16-18 pts, an invitational hand, and the rebid of an unsupported suit promises six. Notice also that we've denied any interest in a major by by-passing any No-trump. A jump to 2 NT wouldn't be a terrible choice, but let's limit our hand and leave it up to Pard.

Q: 2 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 3: Once again, we want to show our point count. Pard has at least 10 pts, but he is unlimited. It's very tempting to jump right to game, because the points are there. BUT!! With Pard an unknown quantity, we may be missing a slam.

Q: 3 - South:

1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This one is a wee bit tricky. If we just bid 2, Pard can Pass or correct to 2. The danger would be if he passed. By jumping to 3, we are promising our 18-plus pts. It is forcing to game, and he can only Pass if his will if registered with the proper authorities.

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Pard is somewhere between 6 and 10 pts. Do we care? Yup. We've got 18-ish pts, and if Pard is at the top of his bid, we have game. We're going to invite. Our bid shows 16-18 pts. Keep in mind that two minimum hands should never be above 2 in an uncontested auction, so Pard will know it's now up to him.

Q: 5 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Why would we bid Spades? Pard already denied holding four Spades when he bid 1 NT. This bid is called a reverse. Notice that for Pard to return to the original suit of Diamonds, he's have to go to the three-level. We need extra!! Don't know about the Dreaded Reverse? More later. Meantime we are showing that our first-named suit is longer than the second, and we've got at least a fat intermediate hand.

And now, let's collect our legacy and go play a hand.
