"Dessert for Breakfast" by Marti Ronemus

February is "Dessert for Breakfast" month, and it comes right in the middle of the Winter doldrums when we need it most. I'm dedicating this column to my BFF's father, Earl, whom I sadly never met. He concocted a dish that is stunning in its simplicity, and sets a standard for breakfast dessert that is almost impossible to beat.

Picture a bowl of hot, creamy, steamy oatmeal, oozing comfort and tastiness. Top it with a scoop of the best French Vanilla ice cream you can find. That's it... perfection in a bowl. Can you taste it?

Let's refocus. We're going to apply Earl's concept of simplicity being the key to perfection to our bidding.

**Solid opener, nice suit, NOT preemptive

 Your choice:
A: 4: We were unable to bid at our first time -- wrong shape for a double, no five-card suit to overcall. BUT! We get a second chance. A jump in the balancing seat is not preemptive. Rather it shows a solid opener and a nice suit. With an opening hand of our own, we can do no less than bid game.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard's 2 bid only promises a minimum hand, but once we have support, our hand jumps in value and is well worthy of a game bid. We need very little from Pard to earn our dessert.

**Shows support for Spades and at least 10 pts.

 Your choice:
A: 5: This is a tough one, in that a penalty double is very tempting. Trouble is that we have very little defensive values against them. With our fit and E/W showing weakness but lots of Hearts, we have a better chance of a strong positive score.

**full NT opener

 Your choice:
A: 4: Do you and Pard play transfers in this scenario? Some do, some don't. Take time to talk about this. If you do, then 2 is your bid. Otherwise, this hand qualifies for a jump to a Spade game.

 Your choice:
A: 4: This hand is so bad we can't afford to pass. We've got a ten-card trump fit and a singleton. Let's apply our Weak Freak.

And now, we'll get to our hand quickly so we can earn our dessert.
