"You're NOT Crazy!" by Marti Ronemus

Not long ago, I got an email from a Faithful Reader, begging me to make his Pard stop snapping her cards, as it was driving him slowly insane. "Maybe she'll listen to you," he pleaded. (Note: NOBODY listens to me, not even my dogs.) I told him I'd help him out as soon as his check cleared.

BUT!! This got me thinking, and then at the doc's office I serendipitously found an old copy of "Current Biology," with an article entitled "Recognizing Misophonia." (C'mon, admit it. You wouldn't be able to resist reading that, either.)

It seems there is a neurological reason why some people are crazed by tapping feet, rapping pencils, popping chewing gum and other sharp, repetitive sounds. Brain scans show these poor pathetic people have more myelin (insulation) protecting the prefrontal cortex. Who knew? So show mercy, and stop snapping those cards. You're making these poor people nuts.

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard's 2 bid promises 10-plus pts, and a five-card Heart suit. With only four, he'd probably negative double. Our hand, with our Heart support, is now worth more than the sum of its points. We have no reluctance to raise to game.

Q: 2 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard has promised us an opening hand and since West is weak, and East can't even advance the pre-empt, he rates to be fairly nice. He also has a good chance of holding four Spades. We'd have to be very nuts to let this go less than game.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard has promised us an opening hand and since West is weak, and East can't even advance the pre-empt, he rates to be fairly nice. Just like last hand, huh? The problem is... OUR hand. We have the same HCP as last hand, but we lack the shape. Our bid shows we aren't broke, with 8-11 ish pts.

Q: 4 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: This hand is so nice, we want to be in game, and we don't expect a slam since both opponents have bid. We could also Double, then bid our suit, showing 19-21 pts. plus a great suit, rate yourself correctly if you chose that.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 2: Some would open this 1, planning to jump to game after Pard's response. We're not so sure. This hand has 6 Spade tricks, 1-1/2 Heart tricks and 2 Club tricks. That's 9-1/2 tricks with a self-sufficient suit, which most people use as the criteria for a 2 opener.

And now we're going to play this hand. We're going to drive the opponents crazy on this one!
