"Inappropriate Gifts" Opener Rebids by Marti Ronemus

At one time or another we've all received a gift that was stunning in its just-plain-wrongness. And so it goes with presidents. When Lincoln first became President, he was overwhelmed with gifts from King Mongkut of Siam (who was fictionalized in "The King and I") who wanted to forge a relationship with the West.

In addition to swords, fabrics and who-knows-what-else (the collection is stored in the National Archives if you want to see them), King Mongkut also told Lincoln he was sending a herd of elephants. Yup. Elephants. The king thought elephants would be of great assistance in settling our country.

Lincoln handled his refusal with exceptional grace, telling the King that because of our lack of tropical climate, he didn't feel the elephants would thrive as they deserved.

Too bad. We could have been the land "where the deer and the elephant play."

So, let's work on our Opener rebids today, trying to avoid the inappropriate.

 K Q J 9 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Anything else wouldn't really be appropriate. We need to make a Jump Shift to let Pard know we've got 17-plus pts and that our cards are in two suits. We well may end up in No-trump, but we won't know till we hear from Pard again.

 A Q 10
 A K J 9

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Let's think about this. We can go right to game based on Pard's support. BUT!! Is there a way to explore a little more? Yes. A new suit after trump is agreed on is forcing, forcing, forcing. It is asking Pard to tell us what he's got outside "our" suit. Wouldn't it be fabulous if he mentioned a piece in Diamonds? Let's give him a chance. We can always return to Spades.

Question 3

 K Q 8 5
 A 7
 K 9 4

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: Pard has denied interest in either major, so there's no reason to bid anything else. He's very likely to have his cards (and points!) in the minors, and we've got the majors covered. He's limited his hand to 6-9 pts, and with our 19, it's up to us. Let's do the appropriate think.

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: No other bid will do. If we bid 2, Pard can pass. We don't want to play this in No-trump if it can be avoided. Our jump into Hearts tells Pard we are very shapely. He can raise either major or if he's got a very good reason, bid 3 No-trump. We will trust him to do the right thing.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 2: This time we don't have enough strength to force to game. Pard can pass on 2, or correct to 2. If he's got a good fit, he can also raise Hearts.
