"Job Opportunity" Place Contract by Marti Ronemus

So, you're thinking about a second job, maybe a career change? How about becoming a Greeting Card Writer. Doesn't that sound like a pleasant way to make a living? Here are some tips from long-time successes in the field. 1) Write to that specific person, don't try to suit everyone. 2) Get used to rejection. Only maybe one in ten ideas will be accepted. 3) Don't use human faces. Cute kitties, outrageous giraffes, anything but people. 4) Learn to be a "lurker." Start eavesdropping conversations. Successful card writers steal from everyday life. 5) Don't think it's easy. Almost anyone can come up with one good card, but can you do it five days a week for years?

And so it is with bridge. Can you come up with a good bid every time? Hmmm.

Today we continue exploring opener rebids when we have a minimum hand.

Q: 1 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: We have such a flat hand. We've got a seven-card Heart fit, but we have no ruffing values so Pard won't be able to trump losers in our hand. We have no other suit to bid. We can show it all, plus the fact we only have 12-14 HCP with one bid.

Question 2

 K Q 2
 A K 9 4 2

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Unlike last hand, we've got some ruffing values with our short Spades, so we're going to support Pard's Hearts even though we only have a seven-card fit. This is very common. It's about as discouraging a bid as we can make. If Pard is paying attention, he won't have to send us a Get Well Card for making this bid.

Question 3

 Q J 8 7 2
 A K 9 4

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard has at least four Clubs and a minimum of 10 HCP. We can't rebid our five-card suit (we need six to rebid an unsupported suit) and with nine cards in two suits, we are not excited about No-trump. Let's show our shape by supporting the clubs. Pard will get our Wish You Were Here message and know what to do.

Question 4

 K Q 10 9 4
 Q 8 7
 A 4

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Sadly, we have to Return to Sender. Pard has 10-12 pts and most likely four Hearts. With our absolute minimum hand, even if Pard is at the max, the math doesn't add up to game. Our shape is sad, we've got scattered honors and nothing special or extra. Let this one go.

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Notice we have the same HCP as we did last hand. BUT! There's a huge difference. Notice we've got a GREAT shape. We've got all our honors smashed into two suits. We've got a singleton, a doubleton and a nine-card trump fit. Happy Birthday!

And now it's time for a hand. Let's put a stamp on that envelope and get moving.
