"St. Patrick's Day" Analyze Bids by Marti Ronemus

We need to get right down to our quiz. Today is St. Patrick's Day, and being half-Irish, I have bars to hit, green beer and Irish Whiskey to drink, jigs to dance and song to sing. No time for bridge.

Before we begin... a quick warning. Never doubt the existence of leprechauns. Growing up, our house was full of them, and socks, homework and essential items disappeared frequently. They also are an explanation for why finesses never work.

Our quiz today will have no hands... just bidding. We'll be analyzing the bids.

Question 1

  Your Hand

Q: 1 - Remember: no hands are given today!
Which is the first bid to limit the hand, showing both a ceiling and floor to point count?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 No-trumpPass
3 No-trump

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: The opening bid of 1 shows 12-21 pts. 1 No-trump shows responder has between 6-9/10 pts, both a floor and ceiling. After North makes that bid, it's up to South to place the contract. The Pard of the limiter is in charge.

Question 5

  Your Hand

Q: 5 - Which is the first limited bid?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1Pass3 No-trump

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: The first three bids are unlimited and forcing. North's 3 No-trump bid is the first bid to show a specific point count, 13-15. Almost always, a natural bid of No-trump shows a tight point range. Incidentally, this is NOT NOT NOT a shut-out bid! When South Does The Math, he may decide to advance the bidding.
