 "Playing Chicken" by Marti Ronemus

Here's one that will leave you speechless. The Wakefield Charitable Trust in MA has a small collection of fancy chickens. Many of these chickens were not designed for the cold New England winters, so the ladies at a local retirement community KNIT SWEATERS for the chickens. As strange as this sounds (and for those of you who don't believe me, go to www.Youtube.com and put in Chicken Sweaters), the chickens are said to be laying more eggs and look adorable. What could be cuter than a chicken in an argyle sweater.

The ladies at the retirement community claim benefits also. The knitting circle has introduced new friendships, and some of the ladies have gotten over their fear of chickens. I have a very dear friend (nameless but you know who you are!) who's terrified of chickens. Would this help?

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Ouch. We'd like to use the Unusual No-trump but... if we bid 2 No-trump, we're saying we have a 1 No-trump opener with stoppers. We'd have to jump to 3 No-trump, which many bid to play showing a stopper and a rich source of tricks. Plus that pushes Pard to the four-level, with our collection of not-much. Talk this over with Pard.

 Your choice:
A: 2: Most play Pard's new suit as forcing for one round. He's unpassed and promises 10-plus pts with a good five-card suit. It's constructive. Don't even think of bidding clubs. This hand is an exception to not rebidding an unsupported five-cards suit. You aren't promising anything extra.

A: 3: We aren't promising anything extra. We are however showing Pard heart support. He deserves a nice sweater, er... bid.

Q: 4 - We still believe we are South:

 Your choice:
A: 2 NT: If East had passed, we would have made a limit raise of 3. If we did that now, it would be preemptive. We can tell Pard we've got a limit raise OR BETTER with our 2 NT. This bid can't be natural because with 11 points and no Heart fit we would redouble.

Q: 5 - South:

 Your choice:
A: 4: This is one of our favorite bids, the Weak Freak. We are promising a hand so bad we cannot say 2, but we've got five card trump support and a singleton or void. It puts the opponents in a tizzy and surprisingly we will often make it.

Ready for a great hand? Let's play chicken with those opponents!
