"Fast Facts" High-level Decisions by Marti Ronemus

Let's start our week with some head-shaking facts we've been saving up special for you.

1. At the Fatburger restaurant chain, you can order a "Hypocrite," a veggie burger topped with several strips of crisp bacon.
2. The first webcam was developed at Cambridge University so they could keep an eye on the coffee pot to see when the fresh brew was ready.
3. In the entire state of Wyoming, there are only two escalators.
4. A group of pug dogs is called a "grumble."

And now, some fast facts about competitive bidding. The opponents are bidding away, your Pard passed and you have a decision to make. We have three choices: Pass (not if we can help it!), Double (with shortness in their suit, opening-ish points and coverage of the other suits) and Overcall (a Darn Good Suit of our own).

What's going to make today's quiz a little harder is that by the time the bidding gets to us, the opponents are at the three-level. Makes it tougher for us, especially opposite a passed Pard.

Ready? We're with you all the way.

Question 1

 A Q J 2

 K 8 4 3
 Q 8 5 4

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass3**
?

**10-12 pts and probably four pieces of trump

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Yes, it's our least favorite bid, and yes we've got the perfect shape for a Takeout Double. BUT!! Show some mercy on Pard. He's going to have to make the contract. The opponents have a minimum of 23-ish points, leaving you and pard with only 17-ish. You've got 12, leaving Pard with only 5. Yes, you have shortness in Hearts, but you just don't have that much to offer.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A Q J 2

 K 8 4 3
 K Q J 8

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass3**
?

**10-12 pts and probably four pieces of trump

 Your choice:
A: Double: Pard's got even LESS this time, but if he has four Spades, you have a darn good chance of actually making it. With length in a minor? Not bad either.

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass3**
?

** 10-12 pts, probably four pieces of trump

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Just because you have a Darn Good Spade suit doesn't mean you can jump in at the three-level. BTW, are you beginning to see why East's jump bid is so hard on the opponents (that would be YOU)?

Question 4

 K Q J 7

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass3**
?

** 10-12 pts, probably four pieces of trump

 Your choice:
A: 4: Do you see that Pard is going to be flat broke? We don't much care though, because we've got an independent suit (one we don't mind playing opposite a singleton or void). If the opponents bid over us, we've got a great defensive hand.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 A K J 8
 K Q 10 9
 K J 9 5 4

Q: 5 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast
-1Pass3**
?

**10-12 pts, denies a four-card major and promises five Clubs.

 Your choice:
A: Double: Yes, Pard is broke (what else is new?), but we've got the absolutely perfect hand to Double. Our void, our shape, our points. We've simply got to get in the action. We wanna fight.

And now that we've got our facts straight, we're ready for our hand.
