"Unwanted Visitors" Over Opener's 1C by Marti Ronemus

Skunks aren't so adorable when they've taken up residence under our decks and porches, are they. We don't want to irritate them, as the consequences can be unspeakable but we really do want them to leave. Rest easy, because we've brought helpful advice.

First, get rid of any pet food outside, and lock up that trash and garbage. All that spells "smorgasbord" in skunk. Next, they enjoy eating grubs, so eradicate grubs and the like from gardens. Also, when they are out doing whatever it is that skunks do, fill their dens with straw and dirt. And finally, even though they are wearing their fancy dress outfits, they aren't really party animals. Leave a radio on low, and they'll abandon your turf.

So, we need to get rid of skunks at the bridge table also, and we can do that by being stars. It begins with our first response.

Pard opens 1. What should we do? Does that require us to bid? Is Pard asking us to bid a major? We can clear the bad smell simply by reminding ourselves that we want to bid our four-card (or longer) suits up the line. That way we'll find our fit. Let's practice our basic skills. (And expect that in bridge, there are always exceptions to the "rule.")

Question 1

Q: 1 - Pard opens 1:

?

 Your choice:
A: 1: I know, I know. They are horrid, but that is irrelevant. We bid them up the line. Period. And besides, Pard is holding the AKJ9.

Q: 2 - Pard opens 1:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: We bid ALL four-card suits up the line. This may not be where we end up, but rest assured we will not miss our major suit fit. Pard will bid up-the-line too. If we are ultimately going to be in No-trump, Pard will know we've got Diamonds covered.

Q: 3 - Pard opens 1:

 Your choice:
A: 1: The five-card suit takes precedence. Later when we bid our Hearts, Pard will know we had more Spades than Hearts. He'll get it without us spraying him.

Q: 5 - Pard opens 1:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: The most we can have is a seven-card major fit. We're going to tell Pard that by bidding 1 No-trump, which shows 6/9-10 pts and denies a four-card major. No bad smells on this one.

That was our warm up. Now it's time for the main act...our hand.
