 "Hats Off!" by Marti Ronemus

Today, we introduce you to Barbara Lowe, a 91-year-old gal who should make us all feel like a bunch of sloths. In the last decade, Barbara has knitted almost 3000 itty-bitty hats as gifts for newborns at a local hospital.

She says she chooses the finest, softest yarn, and each hat is adorned with her signature crocheted flower (detachable if it's too feminine).

Barbara, who has 2 daughters, 11 grandkids and 11 great-grands, heads to the hospital every couple days to deliver her hats and visit with nurses and babies.

When asked about her mission to leave no tiny head uncovered, Barbara said: "When you're on this earth, you only have a limited time to leave something meaningful behind."

Well, here's to you, girlfriend! You GO!!

We have a mission today, and while it's not quite as lofty as Barbara's... We are going to look at bids that should stimulate some discussion between you and your Pard.

 Your choice:
A: 2: a Michaels Cuebid. This promises five-five in the majors. Point count is open to discussion. Some play mini-maxi where the point count is 7-11 OR 17 plus. Others play 7-17. Discuss with Pard. It's a great bid to show shape.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Huh? Pard made a Takeout Double and then bid another suit? But.. doesn't a Takeout Double mean in essence "I've got the money, you pick the restaurant?" Wait!! He must have more than 17 pts. Well, we've got support for his suit, and enough to go to game. Do it.

Q: 3 - Another odd bid. What should we South say?
SouthWestNorthEast
123Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard doesn't have Diamonds. He's got at least 10 pts. and a fit with our Hearts. We're in a competitive auction, and if Pard raised our suit, he'd be following The Law of Total Tricks and showing his number of trumps in a weak hand. The cuebid of the opponent's suit says, "I've got a fit and a more than minimum hand. What's your point count?"

With our minimum hand we need to make a minimum bid. 3 says we're between 12-14 pts. Now it's Pard's problem.

Q: 4 - South?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Give yourself credit for a bid that isn't on the list if you've got a special treatment for a game-going hand with a big fit with Pard. This particular bid is the Jacoby 2NT, and there are a number of replies to the 2NT bid. The point here is that there is no Spade bid that will describe this hand. Usually 2NT response to a major denies a fit. This is a special treatment worth your consideration. If you like it, look it up.

Q: 5 - South: is this a pet ROCK DAY or a PET ROCK day?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: What, you say? How can you bid 1NT with only 14 pts? Easily. In the balancing seat, a bid of 1NT means 12-14 pts. Systems can be on or off. Talk to Pard about it.

And now we continue our mission with a hand.
