"Moment of Vision" Overcalling Notrump by Marti Ronemus

So there they were, in a soda shoppe in Sarasota FL back in 1933, Joseph Friedman and his 5-year-old daughter Judith. When Judith was struggling to reach the top of her straw, Joseph had one of those "Eureka!" moments. Back at home, he took a regular paper straw, put a screw into it, and wrapped dental floss around it to create those spiral grooves. Voila! The bendy straw, which we all take for granted, was born in a moment of vision.

And when we are making a decision how to bid after the opponents open No-trump, we need a moment of vision also. What does it take for us to get involved and bend that straw? We need either SHAPE or a whopper of a hand of our own.

There are a number of very good conventions to handle this situation, but today we are going to bid naturally, and over a 15-17 pt. No-trump.

We want to interfere when we can, not only because we might get a nice little partscore, but because it can foul up the No-trump Stayman and transfers. Fun.

Here are our guidelines. First, we need to be prepared to take a punch to the jaw. Our Left Hand Opponent may well double. This is a situation where vulnerability does count.

Next, we need a rock of a suit and some shape. We aren't going to prevail on strength. Let's look at some examples.

 Your choice:
A: 2: Perfect example of a hand we want to interfere with. We've got a nice suit, we don't care that much that we're vulnerable. West can't use transfers or Stayman, and if East/West get the contract, we've got a nice suit to establish.

 Your choice:
A: Pass: Yes, we have a nice suit, but it's only five cards long. Plus we don't have quite the excellent shape (we miss the singleton we had last hand) and we aren't using up that much bidding space. And the vulnerability is threatening.

 Your choice:
A: 4: We have a slight advantage in that we're BEHIND the big hand with our meager resources. Many would open this hand 4, so let's gobble up all the bidding space we can. This should be fun.

A: Pass: Our suit isn't good, We've got a singleton, but it's just not enough to make up for the bad suit. Our Pard has to be able to rely on the quality of our suit.

 Your choice:
A: 2: We have a hand we would open with (Rule of 20), so let's kick up a little sand. While we aren't using up much bidding spade, we do take away Stayman.

We are warmed up now, and ready to tackle our hand. Let's put our straw in the soda and sip away.
