"The Dark Side" by Marti Ronemus

There are certain animals we expect to be dangerous, and we meet and treat them with respect and caution. But then -- there are the animals with a surprising dark side.

What could be more adorable and more a symbol of sweetness than the Koala Bear. Well, guess again, folks. They are surprisingly aggressive and have a vicious bite. Just ask Mary Ann Forster, who when protecting her two small dogs from a crazed Koala, was bitten so badly that it took emergency responders to remove it.

And what about Dolphins? The clowns of the ocean? Those of us raised on "Flipper" can only be horrified by the behavior of dolphins. Male dolphins are known for slaughtering other dolphins, and there is filmed evidence of them playing Dolphin Volleyball with baby sharks.

And we know just how those baby sharks feel when we are attacked by advance players, don't we? Ouch! My goodness, our only defense is improving our game. Let's get to work.

Q: 1 - South:

 Your choice:
A: Double: Our original Pass enables us to double now. With our singleton in their suit, we can scrape up enough to bid. Pard won't go crazy and will know what we're up to. It is smart to try to take action with shortness in the opponent suit.

Q: 2 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: YES we've got 15 pts. YES we probably have the nicest hand at the table, BUT!! We don't have a bid. Can't double. We're not short in their suit and don't have four of the other major. Can't bid No-trump since sandwiched between two Spade bidders, our Q doesn't really rate to be a stopper. We have to hope our Pard balances, although he can't have much at all. If they end up playing in 2, so be it. We HATE flat hands.

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: We are originally a passed hand, so this can be nothing but the Unusual No-trump. What a perfect chance to show our hand. We'll put those dolphins on the run. Er, swim.

Q: 4 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 2: This is up for discussion. There are those who wouldn't bid with this hand, because of only having 7 HCP (high card points), but we can find 10 pts because of the singleton in their suit. Also, if nothing else, it gives Pard a nice lead. If you passed, you won't be attacked by crazed Koalas, but you might have to turn in your Clint Eastwood School of Bidding membership card.

*Transfer to Spades

 Your choice:
A: 5 No-trump: We've got a slam. Are we worried about the Diamonds? Almost impossible for Pard to NOT have Diamonds. But where do we belong? Should we be in No-trump? Should we be in Spades? Let's make it Pard's problem by bidding 5 No-trump. He can correct to 6 if he's got three or more. Or he can bid 6 No-trump.

Let's play our hand and see what happens today.
