Opener Rebids "Slow Cookers" by Marti Ronemus

We've all got one somewhere in the house, our faithful Slow Cooker. We've all got the recipe book somewhere too, don't we? What could be better on a cold winter's night than a savory stew, bubbling away, waiting for us.

And what a metaphor for bridge partnerships, too. Think about how slowly the flavors develop in the cooker and how time helps mature a partnership. How much better we "click" as we get acquainted, just like ingredients in the Cooker. Not to say we can't have a great game with a pick-up partner, but time enables us to accept each other's foibles.

So let's develop our flavors as we work on our quiz today. And remember, no one wants us to win more than our Pards. So be kind.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K J 3 2
 A Q 10 2
 J 4
 K 6

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Now Pard will know we are at least 5-4. What, you say, our bid isn't big enough? If Responder names a new suit at the two-level, a new suit by us is forcing for one round. This gives us lots of room to find the right contract. If Pard's response had been at the 1-level (in this case, 1 No-trump), we would have needed to Jump Shift.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A J 2
 2
 A J 4 3 2
 K 10 9 8

Q: 2 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1p
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We have a minimum opening hand. We can show that by bidding 1 No-trump, but with our shape, it's much better to bid our Clubs. Our bid is NOT forcing since Pard didn't name a new suit at the two-level. Pard will know we are 5-4 and minimum. We have limited our hand, and now it's his problem. Let him decide how much basil to add.

Question 3

 Q 9
 A Q 8 7
 A Q 10 9 2
 3 2

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1p
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: This is a tough one. We aren't happy with our useless Clubs, but the options are troubling. We can't bid 2, as Pard by-passed that suit, and to bid it at the two-level would be a Reverse, promising a fat intermediate hand. We hate the idea of rebidding an unsupported five-card suit, but bidding 2 would not be wrong. Give yourself credit if that was your choice.

Question 4

 A Q J 9 8
 K J
 A K 3 2

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1p
?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Again, a case can be made for more than one ingredient, er, answer. Some would bid 3, a Jump Shift. Some would bid 2. We like 2 No-trump as it shows our point count and stoppers. Give yourself credit for other answers IF IF IF you and Pard agree!

Question 5

 A K J 4 3 2
 A 9

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p1p
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: We could rebid our Diamonds. If we chose to do so, we would bid 3 because of distribution and high card points. But we're going to show our Spades. There's still a chance we may find a major-suit fit that way. Our bid of 1 could show a point range of anywhere between 12 and 18, so Pard will bid again.

And now, our hand...
