Respond to Major "Unintended Consequences" by Marti Ronemus

In British India there was a little problem with cobras. The government's obvious solution was to put a bounty on them. Sounds sensible, right?

The only problem was that the price for each cobra the British were offering was greater than the cost of breeding and raising a cobra. Result? Snake breeding became a cottage industry.

When the government realized what was happening they scrapped the whole program. People raising the now worthless cobras set them loose. And now there were more cobras than ever. Government Wisdom at its finest.

The problem of course was not looking far enough ahead. That would never happen to us bridge players, would it? We plan ahead.

This quiz is all about responding to Pard's 1 opener. So many choices, so many consequences!

 K 10 4 3 2

Q: 3 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: The intervening bid makes all the difference in the world. In a competitive auction, with a MINIMUM hand, we raise our Pard to the level of trumps in our combined hands. We've got four, Pard has five, that's nine. We bid 3, nine tricks. One per trump.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 K 10 3 2
 K 8
 3 2
 K 10 4 3 2

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--12
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: Now we've got a problem. In a competitive auction, raising Pard's suit is the weakest bid we can make and shows the number of snakes in our basket. We can't bid 3. BUT!! We have another tool: cuebidding the opponent's suit. When we bid 3, Pard knows we have a FIT, and 10-plus pts. We're asking Pard to just bid 3 with a minimum opener, but go to game if he has enough points to go to game opposite our 10-plus pts. We are as yet unlimited.

 A K 10 4 3

Q: 5 - South:

?

 Your choice:
A: 4 No-trump: Pard opened the bidding. We have a nine-card trump fit and 20 pts including distribution. We have first- or second-round control of every suit. That spells Slam. Ask. Your other option is to just go immediately to 6.
