"Crime Prevention on the Cheap" Should we Invite? by Marti Ronemus

We know the police are spread thin, and a very creative solution has cropped up. How about this: Often, the Cop on the Block is a life-sized cardboard cutout. The pseudo-cops have been stationed places like intersections where drivers don't pay attention and public transit stops where parked bikes are frequently stolen.

Results are mixed. In Cambridge MA, the Pseudo Cops have hugely reduced bike thefts, but in Bangalore India, the Cardboard Cops were stolen.

Just like bids. Sometimes bidders fake us out, other times they steal our contracts. Let's get to work to prevent that! Today, it's all about when to extend an invitation to party. We love to party, but we need the right hand.

 Your choice:
A: 3: Pard has limited his hand to 12-14 pts. We, in favor of Hearts, have 11 pts. And it's very possible we have a double fit. Why not invite by showing our Diamonds? If Pard isn't happy, he can bail out at 3. Our bid shows a nice invitational hand.

 Your choice:
A: 3: We're not as excited about this hand, but again, our singleton Spade has value and pushes us into invitational territory. The cop won't arrest us for this.

A: Pass: The shape of our hand is no longer attractive and we really have nothing extra of value. If we try to go further with this, the REAL cops will appear.

A: Pass: We don't like the singleton in Pard's first-bid suit. It's more often than not bad real estate.

 Your choice:
A: Pass: We HATE this hand! Yes, it's 10 HCP, but really. Scattered honors, wasted honors, quacks (Qx, Jxx). A 10 pt hand can be upgraded to invitational or downgraded to minimum. Bidding on with this hand would catch the attention of even Pseudo-Cop.

And now our hand!
