Transfer Responses "Thought You Knew" by Marti Ronemus

Today we're going to straighten you out on more than bridge. We bet you thought, as we did, that Mt. Everest was the highest spot on earth. Wrong!!

If we define the "highest spot" as that which is closest to the moon, stars, etc., then Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador is an incredible 1.5 miles higher due to the oblate spheroid shape of the earth. Hardly seems possible, does it? (And what is an oblate spheroid, anyway?)

And now we have a new fact to amaze friends and partners with. Let's see if we can do the same for our bridge game. Today we're going to tackle rebids by the partner of the No-trump opener, after that responder makes a transfer.

Q: 1 - South:

**Transfer to Spades

 Your choice:
A: Pass: This hand is one of the reasons we love transfers. Don't worry about the quality of the hand. Unless we transfer and then make a "drop dead" pass, we will be a truly Crummy Dummy. In Spades (at a low level!) this hand is actually useful. We are NOT climbing Everest with this one.

**Transfer to Spades

 Your choice:
A: 3 No-trump: We've got game-going values, but we only have five Spades. We are protecting Pard from holding a doubleton in Spades. If Pard holds three Spades, he'll correct to 4.

**Transfer to Spades

 Your choice:
A: 3: Well, we've got a guaranteed eight-card fit in Spades, but we're not sure if we belong in game or not. Let's establish our base camp half-way up the mountain, and let Pard decide what happens next.

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: We're not sure if we belong in game or even if we belong in No-trump. This bid tells Pard we've got 8-9 pts and five Hearts. His problem now.

And get ready... we're about to scale Mt. Chimborazo.
