What Next? After Opening a Minor... by Marti Ronemus

We open a minor. The question often is, "Should I rebid my minor to tell Pard I really HAVE a minor, or should I bid something else?" Because of the scoring in bridge, we want to be in game (if the points are there) in either a major or No-trump. If we don't have a major fit, we look for protection in other suits. We have five examples here of hands where we open a minor and need to decide what to do after Pard's Heart response. Let's make some sense of this.

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A K Q J
 5 4 3 2
 K J 2
 7 5

Q: 1 - We are South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: We've got a Heart fit and a minimum opener. Support Pard. Two things: We want to support Pard and make the most minimum bid we can. Never mind that the Spades are gorgeous and the Hearts are wretched, we have a fit. Next, only people living in underground bunkers for the last 30 years would open this 1. This must be opened 1. This hand, in opening seat outside a No-trump range, rarely occurs (about 7% of the time). Do the right thing.

Question 2

 K Q J 9 3 2

Q: 2 - We are South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1: This is a perfect example of wanting to rebid your Clubs to show Pard you have a "real" suit. Who cares? You need to show your Spades to make sure you don't miss your major fit. You can always rebid the Clubs later, but they are NOT your priority. Those tricks will be there no matter what, especially if you end up in No-trump.

Question 3

 A K 9 8 2
 Q J 10

Q: 3 - We are South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 1 No-trump: Do we get to rebid our Diamonds now? NO! No-trump is the ticket for several reasons. Firstly, it shows a balanced shape hand. Then, it gives Pard more flexibility for his next bid. PLUS!! We limit our hand to 12-14, and make placing the contract Pard's problem.

Q: 4 - We are South:

1Pass1Pass

 Your choice:
A: 1: No temptation here to rebid the minor. Bid the Spades, as we might still have our major fit.

Question 5

 J 9
 A Q J 9 8 2
 8 4 3

Q: 5 - As South?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 2: Finally! NOW you can rebid the Diamonds. Remember, the rebid of an old suit at the 2-level, whether by opener or responder, shows a minimum hand. We would have bid No-trump except we have a very unbalanced hand. We're going to show that by rebidding our suit, guaranteeing six, and lack of balance. Now it's up to Pard.
