"The Ultimate Multi-Tasker" by Marti Ronemus

President James A. Garfield, our 20th, was assassinated after less than a year in office. We don't hear much about him because of his short tenure, and what a shame that is.

Listen to this: Garfield could simultaneously write Greek with one hand and Latin with the other! Isn't that dazzling? For those of us who've failed at the party game of rubbing our tummy with one hand and patting our head with the other, this is a jaw-dropping accomplishment. Think about it for a minute, and then let's spread the word about this most overlooked president.

Can our brains multi-task through this quiz? AND then a hand?

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K Q J
 A Q J 9 3
 2
 Q 5 4 3

Q: 1 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
1p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This is a dandy little multi-tasker of a bid, a Help Suit Game Try. We are saying to Pard, "Yeah, yeah, I know you have 6-9 pts. What I really want to know is can you help me in Clubs." This bid is used when we have an intermediate hand, trump agreement, and a suit of at least three cards with two (at least) losers. Unlike a raise to 3, inviting game, we are inviting game IF IF IF Pard's got that Club help.

Q: 2 - Now we are the Pard of the Help Suit Game Try-er. What would you say with this hand? South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--1p
2p3p
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: Pard knows we have a minimum hand. He doesn't care about that. What he wants to know is if we have help in Clubs. Since we do, we bid game.

SouthWestNorthEast
--1p
2p3p
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: This time, we refuse the invitation. Notice it's the same points, the same shape, but we are lacking Club help.

 A J 9 8 7
 4 3 2

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--2p
2p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 3: With that lovely Diamond suit, and the very nice trump support, we make the more encouraging bid of 3. This is the "Principle of Slow Arrival," the better our hand the slower we tippie-toe up the bidding ladder.

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
--2p
2p2p
?

 Your choice:
A: 4: The corollary of the principle in the last hand is "The Principle of RAPID Arrival." We've got nice trump support and nothing else. We don't want to encourage anything more than game.

Let's prove our multi-tasking skills. We've proven we can bid. Let's try playing.
