"Want to Be Wanted" After RHO Overcalls by Marti Ronemus

In the 16 years my husband and I owned a full-time bridge club we regularly got calls asking for partners. In all those years there were only TWO people who would say, "Get me a GOOD partner." The rest would say, "Get me a NICE partner."

So, if you are like Brenda Lee back in 1960 and "Want to be Wanted" start working on your personality. And it won't hurt if you're also a dynamite player, so let's get to our quiz.

Today's challenge is bidding over the opponent's Preempt. Preempts are designed to hurt, and they do. They are like Godzilla going through Tokyo, eating everything in his way. Our choices are Pass (yeah, right), double for Take-Out, or naming a new suit. Let's give it a try.

Question 1

 K Q 8

Q: 1 - South?
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 3: We are promising a Darn Good Suit in a nice opening hand. We've got shape and with the opening bidder being weak, chances are Pard has a little for us.

Question 2

 K Q 9 4
 K Q 8 4
 A J 7 6

Q: 2 - South?:
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: Double: This is what a Take-out over a preempt looks like. This hand has it all... a singleton which gives us 3 dummy points in addition to our 15 High Card Points. We don't mind shoving Pard to the three-level. He's gonna love us for bidding.

Q: 4 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast

?

 Your choice:
A: 2 No-trump: Bidding over a preempt, 2 No-trump is the same as if we had opened 1 No-trump and we are guaranteeing Heart stoppers. Pard will love us for it.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 Q J 10 4 2
 A 9 4
 K 9
 K J 4

Q: 5 - South:
SouthWestNorthEast
---2
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass: They are vulnerable. We are their worst nightmare and they don't know it yet. If we are VERY lucky, Pard will double and we will be able to pass. If WE were to double, it would be for Take-out, not penalty. If PARD doubles, we can convert it to penalty by passing. Life is good. For us.
