Rebid after Transfer" Mixed Up Confusion" by Marti Ronemus

Friday, we worked on transferring Pard to a major after he opened 1 No-Trump. That's the easy part. What next?

Trust Bob Dylan to warn us: "Mixed Up Confusion" (1962) can be the result if you don't take time to understand the message you want to send.

Firstly, we only transfer if we have five or more cards in the major. It is possible Pard may have a doubleton in the suit, so our rebid has to take that into account to avoid a seven-card fit.

Secondly, our rebid is going to show our point count as well as our distribution.

If we only have five cards in the major, our second bid will be in No-trump, NOT the suit! That way, Pard will know we have five.

If we have six or more cards in the major, our rebid will be in the suit. No danger of a seven card fit.

SO!! Our second bid will show BOTH the number of cards in the suit AND our points. Ready?

A: 3 No-trump: We have game-going values, but by bidding 3 No-trump instead of game in Spades like last hand, we are alerting Pard that we only have five Spades. If Pard has three or more, he will correct to 4♠ on his next turn.

A: 3♠: This time, we have a sure-fire eight-card fit, but only an invitational hand. By bidding 3♠, we are telling Pard, "I've got six Spades, but not sure if we have game or not." It's Pard's problem now.

A: 2 No-trump: We aren't sure if we have an eight-card fit OR if we have game. When we bid 2 No-trump, Pard will get the message and make the decision. Game? No-trump or Spades? He'll figure it out because we avoided the confusion by giving a clear message.

A: Pass: We can't Pass fast enough with this hand. We don't care if it's a seven-card fit or not. We just know Pard will be better off in a suit.

Now, that wasn't so bad, was it. Just remember, responder's rebid shows BOTH the length of the major AND the point count. Take it slow and you'll do fine.
