Leads against a part score in trumps by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your opponents have stopped in a part-score. What will be your strategy to maximise your chances of defeating the contract?

Underleading an honor against a notrump contract is not recommended because it bears a big risk of giving away a trick without a chance of getting tricks from length in return!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 6 3 2
 10 9 8
 J 5 3 2
 Q 8

Q: 1 - You are sitting West, what do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 10 - Underleading the spade ace is of course excluded.
Leading small under the J is to risky, because it could give away the position in the suit, and leading from an honor doubleton is also excluded.
There is only a trump lead left; with 10 9 8, the risk of giving away a trick is very small and you can inhibit ruffs in the short hand.

Question 2

 K Q 6 2
 Q J 10 6

Q: 2 - You are sitting West, what do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass3Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: Q - You have the choice between two sequences. For deciding, you need to look at the number of touching honours: In diamonds, you have only two whereas you have three in clubs. Therefore, you need to lead the Q.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 J 6 2
 A J 10 8
 Q 6 2
 8 4 3

Q: 3 - You are sitting West, what do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 6: Declarer will certainly want to ruff his hearts with dummy’s diamonds. (North has passed over Two Diamonds, so he is very short in Hearts.)
The best way of preventing him from doing that is to lead a trump, even from an honor!

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 6 2
 7 2
 J 10 9 8
 Q 10 6 2

Q: 4 - You are sitting West, what do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: J -Leading a heart from your doubleton would be helping declarer to set up his suit; and a club under the queen would be too dangerous.
What is left is the sequence in diamonds, which, despite North’s bid in that suit, has little chances of giving away a trick.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 K Q 8 6 2
 7 2
 K J 10 9
 J 4

Q: 5 - You are sitting West, what do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 No-TrumpPass2Pass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: J - You have a length in trumps, so you need to think about shortening trumps in the long hand of your opponents, which is the dummy.
Therefore you need to lead from your length in diamonds. The goal is that dummy has to ruff and becomes shorter in trumps than you.
