 Leads against 3NT by Huberschwiller

You need to lead against 3NT.

How to make best use of the bidding sequence and use the lead to try to beat the contract?

It's your lead!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 A 6 5
 9 5
 Q 10 9 8
 J 4 3 2

Q: 1 - You are West. What do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass2Pass
2Pass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 10 - Both your opponents have announced that they hold a four card major, but how will you chose which of your minors you will lead?
It's the quality of the intermediate cards that must guide you; as you have a broken sequence in Diamonds, this should make you lean towards them.
Thus, you lead the top of the inner sequence, the ten.

Question 2

  Your Hand
 A 7 6 2
 9 8 3
 7 6 4
 J 4 3

Q: 2 - You are West. What do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass2 NTPass
3 NTPassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 – Your opponents’ bidding sequence leads you towards a lead in a major.
To underlead an Ace fourth is very bad because the hope of establishing a trick from length is not enough to compensate the huge risk of giving a trick to declarer.
Therefore, you need to lead “Top of Nothing” in Hearts.

Question 3

  Your Hand
 9 7 5
 A 6 5 4 3
 7 5
 9 4 2

Q: 3 - You are West. What do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1 NTPass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 4 – The bidding sequence invites you to lead a major.
This time, you have an Ace fifth. Here, the risk of giving away a trick is largely compensated by the possibility of establishing two tricks from length in the suit!
A five-card suit is nearly always an excellent lead against 3NT.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 8 6 2
 Q 6
 Q 6 5 2
 A 7 3 2

Q: 4 - You are West. What do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass3NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 8 – Again, the bidding sequence calls for a lead in a major, as the opponents have not searched for a fit.
A lead in Hearts is impossible; you therefore need to turn towards the Spades and lead the eight as “Top of Nothing”.
Leading a minor bears the risk of leading into opponents’ long suit and to offer them a trick.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 J 9 6 2
 9 4
 8 6 3 2
 J 5 4

Q: 5 - You are West. What do you lead?
SouthWestNorthEast
1NTPass2Pass
2Pass3NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 9 – As you don’t have a good hand, you need to try to lead in your partner’s long suit.
The opponents did not try to find a fit in Hearts, which means that your partner has at least four cards there, often five. Therefore, you need to lead a Heart.
