Leads against possible misfits by Matthias Huberschwiller

Your opponents have had a bidding sequence that makes you think they could be playing in a misfit.

How will you adapt your lead?

Good luck.

Question 1

 8 6 3
 8 4
 A 6 3 2

Q: 1 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1 NTPass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - North has shown a weak hand, probably with a shortness in Spades. What is going to be declarer's plan?

He will ruff his Spade losers in the short hand. You need to lead Clubs to prevent him from doing this. Your partner can have the King, so a small club lead is best. When you get back on lead, you will be able to play the Ace of Clubs and a third round of Clubs.

Q: 2 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
2Pass2Pass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - This time, dummy can't have more than 2 Hearts, so the odds of declarer wanting to ruff are low. It's better to lead the unbid suit, a low card to show an honor.

Question 3

 7 6 2
 A 9 6 2
 Q 8

Q: 3 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
3PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 3 - Even though the preempt has been passed out, North can have quite a strong hand, but probably without a Spade fit.

Leading a trump would be disastrous, since it could blow up partner's trump tricks. Imagine your partner having King-Jack-x in Spades, and dummy a void.

The best lead is a small Club, trying to set up tricks there.

Question 4

  Your Hand
 Q 7 2

 K J 9 2
 Q J 10 9 8

Q: 4 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass2Pass
2PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: Q - Since South has rebid Spades, he must have a weak hand with very few Hearts. Leading your singleton Heart would be useless, since you have a natural trump trick and you won't ruff more than once.

The Club sequence is really solid and makes for a good lead, even though North has bid them.

Question 5

  Your Hand
 7 6 5 4
 9 6 2
 K 9 6 2
 7 4 3

Q: 5 - What do you lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass2Pass
4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: 2 - South has a good hand with a lot of Hearts, and North has also shown a strong hand.

There is a big risk that South can discard his losers on dummy's Clubs. To prevent this you need to set up tricks as quickly as possible, by leading the suit in which you have something, Diamonds.
