Which suit would you rather lead? by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quizz, you won't have any hands to lead from.

You will have a bidding sequence, and need to determine which suit(s) would be the best to lead in that case.

Good luck.

Question 1

  Your Hand

Q: 1 - Which suit would you rather lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: A major - South denied a 5-card major, and North denied a 4-card major (if he had one, he would have used Stayman). Therefore, you'll find more help from your partner in a major.

Question 2

Q: 2 - Which suit would you rather lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass2Pass
2Pass3 NTPass
PassPass

 Your choice:
A: A minor - Look at the bidding: South promised four Hearts so it wouldn't be a good lead. But since North used Stayman, he has four Spades. You'd do better by leading a minor.

Question 3

Q: 3 - Which suit would you rather lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
--1Pass
1Pass1Pass
1 NTPassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: I have no clue - Here, the sequence isn't revealing enough, it will depend on your hand. South could have strong Diamonds, it's not automatic to lead a Diamond, for instance if you have H-x-x, that would be a poor choice of lead.

Club could be an interesting, since dummy could have as few as three cards, but no always. Would you have Ace-4-3-2 in Clubs, you'd have no hope of setting up any tricks.

Question 4

  Your Hand

Q: 4 - Which suit would you rather lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1Pass1Pass
1Pass3Pass
4PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: A Spade - When both opponent have shown a suit, and then find a fit in a third suit, there is a high probabilty of a cross-ruff play. To prevent this, you might want to lead a trump.

Question 5

  Your Hand

Q: 5 - Which suit would you rather lead as West?
SouthWestNorthEast
1 NTPass3 NTDouble
PassPassPass

 Your choice:
A: A Spade - Your partner did not double because he knew it was going down (How could he?), but he doubled asking you to find the right lead.

In this sequence, it asks for a Spade lead. Discuss it with your favorite partner.
