Answering to preemptive bids by Matthias Huberschwiller

You partner has opened a preemptive bid, showing a long suit, and a weak hand (6 cards at the 2-level, 7 at the 3-level, and 8 at the 4-level).

Your answer will depend on your number of cards (remember the law of total tricks), and your strength.

Good luck!

Question 1

  Your Hand
 K J 7 2
 8 2
 A 6 5 2
 Q 8 2

Q: 1 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 - You don't have a lot of strength, but you have four Spades, opposite partner's 6, this means you have 10 Spades in your side. The law of total tricks says you must bid the number of tricks matching the number of cards of your fit.

This doesn't meaen you are going to win 4, but it means if you go down in 4, it would be a good decision because your opponents had a contract of they own (Here probably in Hearts).

Question 2

 K J
 A 6 2
 A K J 8 2
 K 9 3

Q: 2 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 4 - You are still bidding 4, but this time because you have a lot of points, and you want to win them.

Look at the sequence by West's side : He does not know if you are in the case of the hand 1, or in this case with a lot of points. This means if he bids it could be really dangerous for him!

 K J 9 7
 A 10 9 3

Q: 3 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--2Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: Pass - You have a lot of points, but not enough for game, especially without a Spade fit, remember your partner has maximum 10 points.

Pass and plan on doubling opponents in any suit if West bids.

Q: 5 - What do you bid as South?
SouthWestNorthEast
--3Pass
?

 Your choice:
A: 5 - With 11 Diamond in your side, you need to bid at the 5-level. East-West probably have 4, it will be much harder for them if West can't bid before you are at the 5-level.
