 Suit combinations by Matthias Huberschwiller

In this quiz, you won't have any leads to make. You will have to play a suit the best way you can.

You have as many entries as you need to go back and forth.

Will you find the right way to play the suit?

Question 1

  Your Hand
North A K J 3

South 6 5 4 2

Q: 1 - How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: The Ace, and low to the Jack - You need to start with the Ace (or the King), in case an opponent has a stiff Queen. Then, if nothing comes, you need to finesse against the Queen by going back to your your hand and playing a spot card to dummy's Jack.

Question 2

  Your Hand
North A K J 7 3

South 6 5 4 2

Q: 2 - How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: The Ace and the King - What is different this time?

You have 9 cards in the suit. Unless you have other information, the best way to play that suit is to play for the drop, cashing the Ace and King in the hope that the suit breaks 2-2 or the Queen is singleton.

Question 3

  Your Hand
North A Q 10 6 2

South 5 4 3

Q: 3 - How should you play the suit to try and make 5 tricks?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the 10, and then low to the Queen - You have a double finesse to take (missing two honors). Which finesse do you need to start with?

If you start with a low one to the Queen and it wins the trick, you will have an unavoidable loser. To have a chance to make all the tricks, you need to start with the lowest finesse, by playing low to the 10. If it wins the trick, you can play low to the Queen.

Question 4

  Your Hand
North A K Q 10 2

South 5

Q: 4 - How should you play the suit?

 Your choice:
A: Low to the 10 - With only 6 cards in the suit, your opponents have 7. You shouldn't play for the drop. You need to finesse the Jack - it's your best chance.

Question 5

  Your Hand
North A 6 3 2

South Q 7 5 4

Q: 5 - How should you play the suit for only one loser?

 Your choice:
A: Ace and low to the Queen - To have only one loser in the suit, your best chance is to cash the Ace and then play a low card to the Queen, finessing against the King in the East hand.

Running the Queen would be a mistake when you don't have the Jack. If West covers, you will have sacrificed the Queen for nothing.
