Lead with Barry by Barry Rigal

Here are five deals. When you are on lead, the auction will probably tell you what suit to lead. Sometimes it may even suggest which card to lead. Top of a sequence or fourth highest is normally good enough…but not always. It is always a mistake to lead by rote: sometimes one leads an unsupported honor, sometimes one leads low when one has touching

 Your choice:
A: 4: Lead the spade four. Standard expert practice (all things being equal) is to lead from a king not an ace. Leading from a king is slightly less likely to cost a trick, and the ace acts as a sure re-entry if you need to regain the lead to cash out your suit.

 Your choice:
A: A: Lead the club ace. Partner has a near Yarborough, and your best shot to get the clubs going is to find dummy or declarer with a doubleton jack or king of clubs. By leading the ace you can preserve flexibility as to which option to play for after the sight of dummy.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Lead the heart four. Partner’s opening bid does not promise club length, whereas declarer’s one no-trump call suggests club length and strength. Leading the club queen may well simply sacrifice that card unnecessarily, since dummy has not used Stayman, lead from your longer major.

 Your choice:
A: 4: Lead the spade four. Your best bet to take quick tricks is to play for spade ruffs in your partner’s hand. If your partner has a singleton spade, you can arrange to get in twice to give him two ruffs.

 Your choice:
A: K: Lead the heart king. With your well-placed honors and maximal values the only way declarer will scramble tricks is via ruffs in dummy. Lead the heart king and decide whether to go passive after this, or whether to kill dummy’s ruffs.
