L124Leads when opponents show two-suited hands by linda j green

When the opponents show a two-suited hand, we have to make a decision as to what would be the best lead?

The rule of thumb is usually a trump lead especially if you are long in their other long suit. No rule is carved in stone. We have to think of the bidding.
1. Did our partner open or did we open the auction?
2. Do we have length in both or one of their suits?
3. Do we have an outside AK to look at the dummy?

* Both majors 5/5 or 6/5 shape- Either weak or strong 5-11 HCP or 16 HCP or more.

 Your choice:
A: A - Although you have length in the other suit - spades. Leading the Ace having the King of diamonds allows us to look at the dummy before we decide whether to lead a trump. As you do not control the club suit it is best to get your tricks in early.

* Two -suited hand 5/5 or 6/5 in the majors even in the indirect seat where the opener is an undisclosed hand.

 Your choice:
A: 5 - When your partner opened the bidding, it is best to lead partner's suit. You lead low with three or more cards to show length. Never away from an Ace in partner's suit! If you have it, lead it!
Should declarer have K-J-x you will give declarer 2 tricks instead of one if you lead the Queen!

* Clubs and Diamonds 5/5 or 6/5 shape

 Your choice:
A: K - With two card touching, and no length in the opponents bid suits, it is best to lead from what we have. The longer suit is better. Having the Ace of trumps allows one to be sure to get the lead again.
